Uakaris are special monkeys found in the rainforests of South America. They are a type of New World monkey, which means they live in Central and South America. Their scientific name is Cacajao. Both the English name "Uakari" and their scientific name likely come from words used by the local people who live near them.

One very interesting thing about Uakaris is their bright red faces. When they get excited or a bit upset, their faces can turn an even deeper shade of red!

What are Uakaris?

Uakaris are medium-sized monkeys. They are known for their unique looks, especially their bald, red faces. They also have long, shaggy fur that can be different colors depending on the type of Uakari. Unlike many other monkeys, their tails are quite short and not used for gripping branches.

Where do Uakaris Live?

Uakaris live in the warm, wet rainforests of South America. You can find them in countries like Brazil, Peru, and Colombia. They prefer areas near rivers and often live in forests that flood during the rainy season. They spend most of their lives high up in the trees.

What do Uakaris Look Like?

There are a few different kinds of Uakaris, and they each have slightly different fur colors.

  • The Red Uakari has bright red fur on its body and a very red face.
  • Other types might have white, orange, or even brownish fur.

All Uakaris share the same striking feature: a face with no hair that can be very red. Scientists think the redness of their face might show how healthy a Uakari is. A very red face could mean a very healthy monkey!

What do Uakaris Eat?

Uakaris are mostly fruit eaters. Their diet mainly consists of ripe and unripe fruits they find in the rainforest trees. They also eat seeds, leaves, and sometimes even small insects. Their strong jaws and teeth help them crack open tough fruit shells and seeds.

How do Uakaris Behave?

Uakaris live in groups called troops. These troops can be quite large, sometimes with more than 50 monkeys. They move through the trees together, looking for food. Uakaris are very active during the day. They use different sounds and body language to talk to each other. They often make loud calls to communicate with other Uakari groups.

How Long do Uakaris Live?

In the wild, Uakaris can live for about 15 to 20 years. Like many animals, their lifespan can depend on things like how much food is available and if they face dangers from predators.

Are Uakaris in Danger?

Sadly, some types of Uakaris are considered endangered or vulnerable. This means their numbers are decreasing. The biggest threats to Uakaris are:

  • Habitat loss: Their rainforest homes are being cut down for farming, logging, and other human activities.
  • Hunting: Sometimes, they are hunted for food.

Protecting their rainforest homes is very important to help these unique monkeys survive.
