Ulan is a small village located in eastern New South Wales, Australia. It's a quiet place with a history closely linked to mining and railways. The Ulan Post Office first opened its doors on September 1, 1893, helping connect the community.
About Ulan
Ulan sits on the edge of the Sydney basin. This area is known for its geology. The land here has special rock formations.
Coal Mining and Railways
Ulan is well-known for its coal mine. Coal is a type of rock that can be burned for energy. It is often used to make electricity.
To help move the coal, a special railway line was built. It was called the Sandy Hollow - Ulan Railway. This railway made it easier to transport coal from the mine.
Railway Extension
Later, the coal company extended the railway. They added about 20 kilometers (12 miles) of track. This extension connected to other railway lines near Gulgong. This new route helped trains cross the Great Dividing Range. It offered a lower and easier path for trains.
Ulan Railway Station
The Ulan railway station was an important stop. It served the Sandy Hollow line. Trains from Gulgong would arrive here. Then they would continue towards Akuna.
