Umpqua County, Oregon facts for kids
Umpqua County was a place in the U.S. state of Oregon that used to be a county. It was created on January 24, 1851. This happened because the Oregon Territorial Legislature decided to make a new county. It included the lands along the Umpqua River in southwestern Oregon.
People started moving to the Umpqua area very quickly. This was because gold had been found there! The first meeting for the county government was in Elkton in 1852. Later, the county government moved to Green Valley and then to Yoncalla.

Why Did Umpqua County Disappear?
Umpqua County didn't last forever. The area it covered changed over time.
How Douglas County Was Formed
On January 7, 1852, a new county was made. The territorial legislature created Douglas County. This new county was formed from the eastern part of Umpqua County.
How Coos County Was Formed
Later, on December 22, 1853, another part of Umpqua County was used. A new county called Coos County was created. This new county took some of the western land from Umpqua County.
The End of Umpqua County
Finally, on October 16, 1862, Umpqua County was completely gone. The rest of its land was added into Douglas County. Some people say that political reasons led to the county's end. This means that decisions made by leaders and groups played a role in its disappearance.
