History of Yoncalla
Early Settlers and Naming the City
The first settlers arrived in the area that would become Yoncalla in 1848. They traveled in covered wagons, looking for new places to live. A year later, in 1849, a person named Jesse Applegate arrived. He decided to name the area "Yoncalla" after the Yoncalla-speaking Native American people who lived in that region.
Unique Political Moments
Yoncalla has had some unique moments in its political history. In 1920, the city gained attention because it elected a female mayor and an all-female city council. A city council is a group of people who make decisions for the city, and a mayor is the leader of that group. This was very unusual for the time!
Much later, in 2018, Yoncalla made news again when it elected Ben Simons as mayor. What made this special was that Ben Simons was only 18 years old at the time, making him one of the youngest mayors in the country.
