The Undine Barge Club is a special place in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. It's a club where people learn and practice rowing. Rowing is a sport where you use oars to move a boat across the water. The club is located at #13 Boathouse Row, a famous line of historic boathouses along the Schuylkill River.
The club started a long time ago, in 1856. It's one of the oldest rowing clubs in the United States! Undine Barge Club was also important in starting the Schuylkill Navy in 1858. The Schuylkill Navy is a group of rowing clubs that work together. An Undine member, Mr. B. F. Van dyke, helped create this group. In 1860, Undine bought the boats and equipment from another club called Keystone Barge Club.
The club's name, Undine, comes from an old story called the Legend of Undine. In the legend, Undine is a water spirit. The club even has another building upriver for parties and events. It's called Castle Ringstetten, which is the name of the castle in the legend. Both the main boathouse and Castle Ringstetten were designed by a famous architect named Frank Furness. His designs were very new and helped shape modern architecture.
