Unión is a lively neighbourhood (or district) located in the city of Montevideo, which is the capital of Uruguay. It's a place with a rich history and important buildings.

Where is Unión Located?
Unión is a neighborhood that shares its borders with several other areas in Montevideo. To its northwest, you'll find Mercado Modelo and Villa Española. Looking northeast, it's next to Maroñas. To the east, it borders Malvín Norte. If you head south from Unión, you'll reach Buceo and Parque Batlle. Finally, to the southwest, it's close to La Blanqueada and Larrañaga.
The Story of Unión: A Look Back in Time
The history of Unión began in 1845. At this time, General Oribe was leading a long attack on Montevideo. This event is known as the Great Siege of Montevideo. During the siege, a special court called the Tribunal of Unión was created in this area.
In 1849, General Oribe founded a small village here. He named it "Restauración." After the civil war ended, the village grew. Its status was officially changed from a "Pueblo" (village) to a "Villa" (town). On November 11, 1851, it was renamed "Villa de la Unión" by a special government order.
Schools and Learning in Unión
Unión is home to several educational places. These help young people in the neighborhood learn and grow.
- Colegio y Liceo Santa Luisa de Marillac is a private school. It was started in 1919 by the Vicentian Sisters. Since 1993, it has been run by lay (non-religious) staff.
Places of Worship
The neighborhood has several important religious buildings.
- Sanctuary of the Miraculous Medal and St. Augustine is a well-known Roman Catholic church. People often call it "Iglesia de la Unión." It is run by the Congregation of the Mission.
- Parish Church of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel and St. Cajetan is another Roman Catholic church in the area.
- Parish Church of St. Joseph the Worker is also a Roman Catholic church.
