The Union Bank Tower is a tall office building in downtown Portland, Oregon. It has 15 floors and is about 82 meters (269 feet) tall. The building was finished in 1969.

When it was completed, the Union Bank Tower was briefly the tallest building in Portland. However, another building, the Georgia-Pacific Building (now called Standard Insurance Center), soon became taller.

Building History

Early Years and Original Name

The Union Bank Tower was built for the Bank of California. This bank needed a bigger space for its offices in Portland. They had been in an older building since 1925.

Construction of the new tower started in 1967. Before the tower, the area had other buildings, including the Rosenblatt Building and two theaters. These were taken down to make space for the new tower.

The bank opened its offices in the new building on December 8, 1969. At first, the building was known as the Bank of California building.

Changes in Ownership and Name

In 1972, a person named Harry Mittleman bought the building from the bank. The Bank of California then rented space in the building for many years.

Later, in 1996, the Bank of California joined with another bank called Union Bank. Together, they became Union Bank of California. Because of this, the building's name changed to the Union Bank of California Building in September 1996.

Around 2008, a company called The Bank of Tokyo-Mitsubishi UFJ took full ownership of Union Bank. Union Bank then started using the name "UnionBank". After this, the Portland building became known as the UnionBank Tower.

As of 2012, the building was owned by Melvin Mark Companies and Downtown Development Group. They added more underground parking spaces to the building that year.

Building Design

Unique Architectural Style

The Union Bank Tower was designed by a company called Anshen and Allen. They used a style called the International Style. This style often features simple, clean lines and large glass windows.

A special part of the Union Bank Tower is its exposed service areas. These are on the south and west sides of the building. They are covered with light gray slate stone that has a greenish color. People say this stone came from the same area in Wales as the stones used to build Stonehenge.

The inside of the building was designed by Maria Bergson from New York City.
