Union Square is a group of two very tall buildings, called skyscrapers, in Downtown Seattle, Washington. These buildings are right next to Freeway Park. They were built in the 1980s and are mostly used for offices.

The whole Union Square area has a large parking garage for 1,100 cars. It also has a nice outdoor space, a three-story shopping area, and an underground walkway. This walkway connects to the Fifth Avenue Theater and Rainier Square.

Both Union Square buildings earned a special award called LEED certification in 2009. LEED stands for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design. It means the buildings are designed to be good for the environment. Six years later, they got an even higher award, LEED Platinum certification. This was because they made changes that cut their energy use by 40 percent each year!

The Buildings of Union Square

Union Square is made up of two main skyscrapers. Each one has its own unique features.

One Union Square

One Union Square is a 36-floor skyscraper that is about 139 meters (456 feet) tall. It has two floors that are underground. The outside of the building is covered in shiny aluminum.

Construction of this office building finished in 1981. It was the first office building in Seattle to have all its important safety systems, like fire alarms and sprinklers, in one central spot. The company that designed One Union Square was TRA Architects.

Two Union Square

Building Two Union Square started in 1987 and was finished in 1989. This building is even taller than One Union Square. If you include the very top of its flagpole, it stands about 243 meters (797 feet) high. This makes it the second-tallest building in Seattle!

The architectural firm NBBJ, which is based in Seattle, designed this impressive tower. It was officially opened on July 29, 1989. Two Union Square has 56 floors and a huge amount of space for offices, over 100,000 square meters (1.1 million square feet). It also has an underground walkway that connects to the Seattle Hilton Hotel and shops at Rainier Square.

This skyscraper was also the first to use a very strong type of concrete. This concrete can handle a lot of pressure, about 19,000 pounds per square inch!
