Kids Encyclopedia Facts

A unit is a single part of something bigger. It can be a way to measure things, like a unit of measurement. For example, a meter is a unit of length. It can also mean a group of people working together, like a unit in an army.

Sometimes, the word "units" refers to the digit on the far right side of a number. This is also known as the "ones" place. For example, in the number 25, the digit 5 is in the units place.

Other words come from the idea of a unit:

  • Unity means when different parts come together to form one whole. It's about being together and working as one.
  • To unite is the action of bringing things or people together.

For example, a football team might be called "X United." This name means that the people from the town of X have come together to support that team. It shows they are united.

In the popular BBC TV series Doctor Who, UNIT stands for the UNified Intelligence Taskforce. This is a special military group on Earth. Their job is to protect the planet from invading aliens.
