The Ellenville Post Office Building
A Special Stone Design
Many post offices in the Hudson Valley region were built using stone. This style shows the old Dutch influence in the area. The Ellenville Post Office was built in 1940. It was part of a big government effort called the New Deal. The New Deal helped the country recover from the Great Depression.
The building was constructed by the Works Progress Administration (WPA). The WPA was a New Deal program that created jobs. It hired people to build roads, bridges, and public buildings like post offices.
President Roosevelt's Help
President Franklin D. Roosevelt personally approved the design for this post office. He grew up in the Hudson Valley. He knew how important stone buildings were to the area's history and look. He wanted new post offices in the region to match this traditional style.
In 1939, people in Ellenville found out their new post office was going to be made of brick. They were not happy! Many old stone houses were already in Ellenville. So, they sent a telegram to President Roosevelt to complain.
Roosevelt quickly responded, "I will stop this brick right away!" He sent the building plans back to be redesigned. The final building looks like the old stone houses found throughout the region.
A Historic Landmark
The Ellenville Post Office is recognized as an important historical site. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1988. This means it is a building that is important to the history of the United States. It is also located within the Ellenville Downtown Historic District.
