Universidad is a special neighborhood, or barrio, located in Río Piedras. It is one of the 18 barrios that make up the city of San Juan, Puerto Rico.
This area was once part of the separate town of Río Piedras. In 1951, Río Piedras became a part of San Juan. That's when Universidad officially joined San Juan as one of its barrios. Universidad is famous because it's home to the main campus of the University of Puerto Rico at Río Piedras. This is a very important university! You can also find the underground Tren Urbano (city train) system here. The Universidad station is located beneath Ponce de León Avenue.
