The University of the People (often called UoPeople) is a special kind of online university. It is a non-profit school, which means it doesn't try to make money. It is also accredited, so its degrees are officially recognized. This university is located in Pasadena, California, in the United States. It offers online degrees in subjects like business administration and computer science.
What is UoPeople?
UoPeople's main goal is to give any student who qualifies a good education that they can afford. It wants to make learning possible for everyone.
The school was started by Shai Reshef in January 2009. Since then, it has worked with famous universities like New York University and Yale University. Big companies such as Google, Microsoft, and Hewlett-Packard have also given money to help UoPeople.
How Much Does it Cost?
Students at UoPeople pay a small fee of $50 when they first sign up. They do not pay yearly tuition fees. Instead, they pay $100 each time they take an examination. This means you only pay for the exams you take.
You also don't need to buy expensive books. UoPeople uses free online open source textbooks.
To get an associate degree (a two-year degree), a student needs to take 20 exams. This costs a total of $2,000. For a bachelor's degree (a four-year degree), 40 exams are needed, costing $4,000 in total. If students cannot afford these costs, they can apply for special help called scholarships.
Who Teaches There?
Many smart people teach at UoPeople. One notable person is Torsten Wiesel.
