Unmukt Chand (born on March 26, 1993) is a talented former Indian cricketer. He is a right-handed batsman who plays at the top of the batting order. Currently, he plays for the Los Angeles Knight Riders in Major League Cricket and the Melbourne Renegades in Australia's Big Bash League. Unmukt has played for teams like Delhi and Uttarakhand in Indian cricket. He also played for the Mumbai Indians and the Delhi Capitals in the Indian Premier League (IPL). A big highlight of his career was leading the India Under-19 cricket team to victory in the 2012 U-19 Cricket World Cup. In August 2021, Unmukt announced he was retiring from playing cricket in India.

Early Life and Cricket Beginnings
Unmukt Chand was born into a Kumaoni Rajput family. Both his parents, Bharat Chand Thakur and Rajeshwari Chand, were teachers. His family is originally from the Pithoragarh District in Uttarakhand. He moved schools during his ninth grade year.
Unmukt Chand's Cricket Journey
Starting Strong in Youth Cricket
Unmukt Chand showed his skills early on. He scored 499 runs for the Delhi Under-19 team. This included two centuries and one half-century. His great performance earned him a spot on the Delhi senior team. He scored 151 runs in a tough match during the 2010-11 Ranji Trophy. That year, he also scored two half-centuries against Mumbai and Saurashtra. He ended up with 400 runs in five matches. He also played in important junior tournaments like the Vinoo Mankad Trophy.
Leading the India Under-19 Team
Unmukt Chand was chosen to be the captain of the Delhi Under-19 team. He also led the North Zone Under-19 team. Later, he became the captain of the India Under-19 cricket team. He led them in a special series in India that included teams from Sri Lanka, West Indies, and Australia. He scored an amazing 122 runs without being out against Sri Lanka. He also scored two half-centuries against Australia and West Indies. He finished that tournament with 336 runs.
In April 2012, Unmukt led the India Under-19 team in another series in Australia. He scored 94 runs against England in the semi-final. This helped India win the match. In the final, he scored an unbeaten 112 runs against Australia. This fantastic century helped India win the tournament easily. He scored 281 runs in 5 matches during this series.
In June 2012, Unmukt continued his great form in the ACC Under-19s Asia Cup. He scored 116 runs against Sri Lanka in the semi-final. Then, he scored 121 runs against Pakistan in the final. He was named the best player in both of these important games. He was the top scorer in the tournament with 286 runs.
On August 26, 2012, Unmukt led the India Under-19 team to win the 2012 ICC Under-19 Cricket World Cup in Australia. In the final, he scored a captain's knock of 111 runs. This amazing performance helped India defeat Australia and win the World Cup.
In March 2013, Unmukt scored 116 runs for Delhi in the Vijay Hazare Trophy final against Assam. Delhi won this game and took home the title for the first time.
Playing in the IPL
Unmukt made his debut in the IPL in 2011 for Delhi Daredevils. He later played for the Rajasthan Royals in 2014. In 2015, the Mumbai Indians picked him up. He was part of the Mumbai Indians team that won the IPL title that year.
Success in Other Leagues
Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy
In the 2012–13 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, Unmukt scored 321 runs for Delhi. He scored two centuries in a row. First, he made 105 runs off 67 balls against Kerala. Then, he scored 125 runs off just 63 balls against Gujarat.
Minor League Cricket in the USA
Unmukt started playing in the Minor League Cricket (MiLC) in the USA on August 14, 2021. He was the top run-scorer in the 2021 competition. He scored 612 runs and led his team, the Silicon Valley Strikers, to win the championship title. He later joined the Atlanta Lightning team for the 2023 season.
Big Bash League in Australia
Unmukt made history on January 18, 2022. He played for the Melbourne Renegades in the Big Bash League (BBL). This made him the first Indian male cricketer to play in the BBL.
Major League Cricket in the USA
Unmukt was chosen by the Los Angeles Knight Riders to play in the first-ever Major League Cricket season.
Bangladesh Premier League
In November 2022, Unmukt was selected to play for the Chattogram Challengers in the 2022–23 Bangladesh Premier League. He became the first Indian player to play in this league.

Books
Unmukt Chand wrote a book about his experiences in the Under-19 World Cup. The book is called The Sky is the Limit (2013). It tells the story of his journey as a cricketer. It covers his childhood, the World Cup victory, and how he led his team to win the trophy. This was India's first Under-19 World Cup win outside of Asia. Famous cricketers like Rahul Dravid and V.V.S. Laxman wrote special introductions for his book.
