History of Unna District
For a long time, this area was known as Hamm. In 1901, the town of Hamm became its own separate city district. However, the government for the larger rural district of Hamm stayed in the city until 1929.
In 1929, a big change happened. The main office for the district moved to Unna. At the same time, the district's name also changed to Unna. This is how the Unna district got its current name.
Later, in 1975, more towns joined the district. These included Lünen, Schwerte, Selm, and Werne. This made the Unna district bigger and more connected.
