Upper Peoria Lake is a special, wider part of the Illinois River. It is located in the state of Illinois, USA. This "lake" section is mainly found between Peoria County and Woodford County, Illinois. It's an important natural area for both people and wildlife.
What is Upper Peoria Lake?
Upper Peoria Lake is not a separate lake, but a wide part of the Illinois River. It stretches from a place called South Rome all the way to Peoria Heights. This section of the river becomes much wider and slower, making it look and feel like a lake.
The lake is near areas like Spring Bay and the Detweiller Marina in Peoria. These spots are roughly in the middle of this long, wide river section.
How it Connects to Other Waters
Just north of Peoria Heights, Upper Peoria Lake narrows down. It then flows into a smaller part of the Illinois River. This next section is often called Peoria Lake, or sometimes Lower Peoria Lake. So, Upper Peoria Lake is like the bigger, upstream neighbor to Lower Peoria Lake. Both are important parts of the larger Illinois River system.
