Urmas Alender (born November 22, 1953 – died September 28, 1994) was a famous Estonian singer and musician. He was the lead singer for two very popular Estonian rock bands, Ruja and Propeller.
Urmas Alender was born in Tallinn, Estonia. He started his music journey in 1969 with a rock band called Shades. The next year, he joined another band named Andromeeda as their singer.

Urmas Alender's Music Career
Leading the Band Ruja
In 1971, Urmas Alender became the lead singer of the progressive rock band Ruja. He worked with pianist Rein Rannap. Ruja was inspired by Western rock bands like Genesis and Yes. They often used poems by Estonian writers in their song lyrics. Ruja became very successful across Estonia. Urmas Alender stayed with Ruja until the band ended in 1988.
Other Bands and Projects
From 1979 to 1980, Urmas Alender also sang for the Estonian punk rock band Propeller. He also performed with other bands like Teravik and Data. In 1983, he briefly played with a group called Kaseke.
In 1987, Urmas Alender appeared in an Estonian music documentary called Pingul keel (which means Tightened String). He was featured alongside other well-known Estonian musicians.
Moving to Sweden and Final Years
After facing difficulties from the Soviet authorities, Urmas Alender moved to Sweden in 1989. He lived there for a few years.
Sadly, Urmas Alender passed away on September 28, 1994. He was on a ship called the MS Estonia, traveling from Tallinn to Stockholm, Sweden. The ship sank in the Baltic Sea. He had a daughter, Yoko Alender, and a son, Ion Alender.
In 2003, a documentary film about Urmas Alender was made by Liia Sakkos. It was called Teisel pool vett, which means On the Other Side of the Water. This was also the name of a song by his band Ruja.
