Urrea de Gaén is a small town in Spain. It's located in the province of Teruel, which is part of the Aragon region. In 2018, about 436 people lived there.
The town is found near the Martín River, which flows into the Ebro River. It sits at an elevation of 308 meters (about 1,010 feet). Urrea de Gaén is about 160 kilometers (100 miles) from Teruel, the capital city of its province. It's also about 75 kilometers (47 miles) from Zaragoza, the capital of the Aragon region.

A Look Back: The History of Urrea de Gaén
Urrea de Gaén has been a home for people for a very long time. We know this because of old ruins and items found during digs.
Early Settlers and Roman Times
People first lived here at least 4,100 years ago, during the Chalcolithic period (around 2100 BC). Back then, tribes of Iberian people called sedentanos lived in the area. Later, the Roman Empire took over. The Romans built many farms and villas, which were like large country houses, all around the area.
Muslim Rule and Aragonese Conquest
For a long time, from the 700s to 1610, Muslim people lived in Urrea de Gaén. Their time here left a big mark on the town's buildings, giving them a special Moorish style. In the 1100s, the Aragonese people took control of the area. This happened during the time of King Ramon Berenguer IV and Queen Petronila. Urrea de Gaén became part of Aragon's defense system.
The Lordship of Híjar
After many changes and agreements, King James I created the Lordship of Híjar in 1268. This special area was given to his son, Pedro Fernandez de Hijar. From that time on, Urrea de Gaén was always under the rule of the Híjar family. This continued until the old system of rule ended in the 1800s.
Amazing Buildings: Monuments of Urrea de Gaén
Urrea de Gaén is full of interesting buildings that show its rich history and art. Here are some of the most important ones:
San Pedro Mártir Church
- The Iglesia de San Pedro Mártir (Church of Saint Peter Martyr) was built in the 1700s. It has a beautiful style that mixes Baroque and Neoclassic designs. The church is made of stone and brick.
- It was designed by an architect named Agustín Sanz in 1782.
- This church once held famous artworks, including a painting by Francisco de Goya called "Apparitions of the Virgin to Santiago." Sadly, these original artworks are now missing.
- Today, the main altar has a large artwork by painter Alejandro Cañada. There is also a copy of Goya's painting on the altar dedicated to the Virgen del Pilar.
The Town Hall Facade
- The Town Hall Facade was built around the same time as the church. It has a civil Baroque style and is made of brick.
- The bottom part of the facade has four arches. Two of these arches are below street level and lead to the old Moorish and Jewish parts of the town, known as La Muela, and also to the New District.
