Early Life and Career
Ursula Carroll was born in Cavan, Ireland, in 1929. She joined Britain's Women's Royal Air Force (WRAF) and served from 1948 to 1950. In 1954, she met Lucio Appolloni, who would become her husband. They married in Italy in 1958 and lived there until 1965. During this time, Ursula became fluent in Italian.
The couple had four children: Luisa, Suzanne, Andrew, and Simon. Later, they moved to Canada and settled in Toronto. Before becoming a politician, Ursula was a freelance writer. Her articles appeared in newspapers like the Toronto Telegram and Toronto Star. She also directed a children's mime opera.
Entering Canadian Politics
Ursula Appolloni first got involved in politics in 1968. She worked as the office manager for Charles Caccia's election campaign. In 1974, she decided to run for office herself. She became the Liberal Party candidate for the York South area.
She ran against David Lewis, who was the leader of the New Democratic Party. In a surprising result, Ursula Appolloni won the election by 1,863 votes. This victory ended David Lewis's political career. Her husband, Lucio, had also run in York South in 1972 but had lost to Lewis.
Time as a Member of Parliament
Ursula Appolloni served as an MP for York South. Later, she represented the new riding of York South—Weston. She remained an MP until she retired in 1984. For most of her time in Parliament, she was a backbencher. This means she was a regular MP, not a minister in the government.
However, from 1980 to 1982, she served as a Parliamentary Secretary. She worked with the Minister of National Defence. Ursula Appolloni supported several important issues. These included creating pensions for housewives. She also supported putting unemployed young people into the military reserve.
Life After Politics
After leaving politics, Ursula Appolloni worked as an editor. She worked for Health and Welfare Canada, a government department. In June 1994, she was diagnosed with lung cancer. She passed away seven months later.
Her fellow Liberal politician, Charles Caccia, spoke highly of her. He described her as someone with a strong social conscience. He said she cared deeply about pensioners, women's rights, and social justice.
