Usha Narayanan, born Tint Tint (Burmese: တင့်တင့်; 1922 — 24 January 2008), was the First Lady of India from 1997 to 2002. She was married to K. R. Narayanan, who became the tenth President of India. Usha Narayanan was the second First Lady of India who was born in another country. She also served as the Second Lady of India. She played an important part in social welfare activities for women that were started by the President's office.

Her Early Life
Usha Narayanan was born as Tint Tint in 1922. Her birthplace was Yamethin, in a country then known as Burma. Today, Burma is called Myanmar.
She went to Rangoon University and earned a Bachelor of Arts degree. After her studies, she worked as a tutor. She taught Burmese Language and Literature at the university. Later, she received a scholarship to study at the Delhi School of Social Work. There, she earned a Master of Arts degree. She specialized in helping young people who had problems with the law.
Her Life with K. R. Narayanan
While working in Rangoon, Burma (now Myanmar), Tint Tint met K. R. Narayanan. They later got married in Delhi on June 8, 1951. Tint Tint was active in the YWCA, a group that helps young women. She heard that Narayanan was a student of a famous thinker named Laski. She asked him to speak about political freedom to her friends.
Even though K. R. Narayanan and Tint Tint were born in the same country, British India, they had different citizenships when they met. Because Narayanan worked for the Indian Foreign Service (IFS), their marriage needed special permission. This permission came from Jawaharlal Nehru, who was India's first Prime Minister. After their marriage, Tint Tint chose the Indian name Usha. She also became an Indian citizen.
Contributions and Family
Usha Narayanan worked on many social welfare programs. These programs helped women and children in India. She used her knowledge from her Master's degree in Social Work to help others.
She also translated several short stories from the Burmese language into English. One collection of translated stories was by Thein Pe Myint. It was called Sweet and Sour and was published in 1998.
Usha and K. R. Narayanan had two daughters. Their names are Chitra Narayanan and Amrita Narayanan. Chitra Narayanan later became an Indian ambassador to countries like Switzerland.
Passing Away
Usha Narayanan passed away on January 24, 2008. She was 86 years old. She had been ill for several years. She died at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital in Delhi. She was buried in the Christian Cemetery on Prithivraj Road in Delhi.
