Utako Yamada (山田詩子, Yamada utako) is a talented Japanese writer, illustrator, and translator from Tokyo, Japan. She is well-known for her wonderful children's books, especially The Story of Cherry the Pig and Buzzy the Honeybee. Utako also owns a special tea shop called Karel Capek in Kokubunji, Tokyo. She lives in Tokyo with her husband and two sons.

Utako Yamada's Journey

Utako Yamada was born in 1963 in Nagoya, Aichi Prefecture, Japan. After finishing her studies in Sociology at Ritsumeikan University in Kyoto, she moved to Kokubunji, Tokyo, in 1987. There, she opened her very own tea shop called Karel Capek. She named it after a famous Czech writer.

Creating Tea and Stories

When Utako started her tea shop, she didn't just sell tea. She also became very busy choosing and mixing different teas. She created new recipes for delicious sweets and designed pretty packages for her tea products. During this time, she also began to illustrate and write her own stories. Many of her characters and tales are inspired by her real-life experiences.

In 2002, Utako opened another shop called Karel Capek Sweets in Kichijoji. This shop focuses on both tea and tasty sweets. She also designs many products related to tea, like special tea accessories.

Books and Collaborations

Utako Yamada has written three official children's books that were published in Japan. One of these books has even been translated into English! Besides her own stories, she has also translated some of the classic Winnie the Pooh storybooks into Japanese. She has written many recipe books too, all about making delicious tea and sweets.

Utako has also worked with Sanrio, a famous Japanese company known for characters like Hello Kitty. Together, they created special merchandise and tea-related items based on Sanrio's Wish me mell series.
