History of Utopia
The name "Utopia" means a perfect place. One idea for the town's name came from Karl Burkli, who moved to Texas in 1855 from Switzerland. He wanted to start a perfect, self-sufficient community called Utopia, but his plan didn't work out.
Another story says that people from an older settlement nearby, called Waresville, chose the name Utopia. They picked it because the name "Montana, Texas" was already taken. Even today, the local cemetery is still named after Waresville. There was another plan for a perfect community nearby, but it was canceled after a similar project, La Reunion, failed near Dallas.
