Uyea (pronounced "OO-yah") is a small, empty island in Shetland, Scotland. It lies just south of a larger island called Unst. Even though no one lives there now, Uyea has a long and interesting history.
Island History
People lived on Uyea a very long time ago, even during the Bronze Age. You can still see an ancient burial mound there called a chambered cairn. Later, in the 1100s, a small church was built. It was named after Saint Olaf and overlooked a bay called Brei Wick.
An Amazing Journey
In 1745, two young girls from Uyea went to a tiny island nearby, Haaf Gruney. They wanted to milk some cows grazing there. On their way back, a big storm hit. Their small boat was blown far across the sea.
Eventually, they landed safely in Karmøy, a place in southwest Norway. The Uyea girls ended up marrying men from Karmøy. Their families still live there today!
Uyea During World War II
Jack Priest wrote about Uyea during World War II. He said it was a "beachcomber's dream." This means lots of interesting things washed up on its shores. The island was touched by waters from the Atlantic Ocean, the Norwegian Sea, and the North Sea. These different currents brought all sorts of items to Uyea's beaches.
A Member of Parliament
Uyea was once home to Sir Basil Neven-Spence. He was a Conservative politician. He served as a Member of Parliament (MP) for Orkney and Shetland. He held this important job from 1935 to 1950. An MP is a person elected to represent a group of people in the country's government.
Sir Basil Neven-Spence was the last person from a party other than the Liberal Democrats or Liberal Party to represent this area.
