Víctor Montoya's Early Life
Víctor Montoya was born in La Paz, Bolivia, on June 21, 1958. He grew up in mining towns called Siglo XX and Llallagua. These towns are in the northern part of the Potosí area. He saw how hard life was for the miners there. This made him want to help them improve their lives. When he was nine years old, he saw a sad event called the San Juan events.
Facing Challenges and Finding His Voice
In 1976, because of his activities to help others, Víctor Montoya faced difficulties. He was put in prison by the military government of Hugo Banzer Suárez. While he was in prisons like San Pedro Prison and Chonchocoro-Viacha, he started writing. His first book, called Strike and Repression, was about what he saw and experienced.
Life in Sweden and His Work
Amnesty International, a group that works to protect human rights, helped Víctor Montoya get out of prison. In 1977, he moved to Sweden as an exile, meaning he had to leave his home country. He studied at the Stockholm Institute of Education. There, he took special courses to become a teacher.
He taught the Quechua language, which is spoken in parts of South America. He also helped with cultural projects at a library. Víctor Montoya led workshops where people could learn about writing stories. He worked as a teacher for many years.
He was in charge of two literary magazines, PuertAbierta and Contraluz. His writing has won him awards and special grants. His stories have been translated into other languages. They have also been included in books with stories by many different writers from around the world. Today, he writes for newspapers and magazines in Latin America, Europe, and the United States. He also helps manage an online collection of stories by Latin American writers living in Sweden.
