The Story of V.M. Ybor
For many years, V.M. Ybor was home to many Cuban, Spanish, and Italian families. These families included cigar workers, managers, and business owners. They lived in this middle-class neighborhood, just a few blocks north of the busy commercial area of Ybor City. That main area was centered around 7th Avenue.
In the middle of the 20th century, the cigar industry changed. This caused many residents to move to other parts of Tampa. Even with these changes and the urban renewal projects in nearby Ybor City during the 1960s, many old homes and buildings in V.M. Ybor are still standing. They have kept their original historic look.
Today, many homes, businesses, and cigar factories built in the early 1900s are still used. Some are now offices for architects or technology companies. Others are design consulting firms. In the early 2000s, many new homeowners moved in. They were excited to help bring the neighborhood back to its former glory in central Tampa.
