How VSCO Started
The Beginning of Visual Supply Company
Joel Flory and Greg Lutze started a company called Visual Supply Company in California. This happened in 2011. The VSCO app itself was launched in 2012.
Growing and Changing
In May 2014, VSCO received $40 million from investors. This money helped the company grow. In 2017, VSCO started offering a special membership. Users could pay a fee to get more features. By 2018, the company had over 2 million paying members. It also had received $90 million in total funding.
In 2019, VSCO bought a company called Rylo. Rylo made tools for editing videos. In December 2020, VSCO also bought Trash. This was an AI-powered app for editing videos.
VSCO's Reach and Leadership
By April 2018, more than 30 million people were using VSCO. The company has offices in Oakland, California, which is its main headquarters, and in Chicago, Illinois. In September 2023, Eric Wittman became the new CEO of VSCO. Joel Flory, one of the co-founders, became the executive chairman.
How to Use VSCO
Getting Started with the App
To use the VSCO app, you first need to create an account. Once you have an account, you can start editing.
Editing Your Photos and Videos
You can take new photos directly in the app. You can also bring in pictures from your phone's camera roll. On iOS devices, you can even import short videos or animated GIFs. These are called DSCOs in the app.
VSCO offers many ways to edit your pictures. You can use different preset filters to quickly change the look of a photo. There's also a "toolkit" feature. This lets you make more detailed changes. You can adjust things like how faded or clear a picture is. You can also change skin tone, tint, sharpness, saturation, contrast, temperature, and how bright the photo is.
Sharing Your Creations
After editing, you can post your photos to your VSCO profile. You can add captions and hashtags to describe them. You can also save your edited photos back to your phone's camera roll. Or, you can share them with other social media apps.
If you have a VSCO yearly membership, you can also edit your own videos from your camera roll. However, you cannot post these edited videos to your VSCO account as "VSCO Film X" videos.
VSCO works with different types of image files. These include common JPEG files and also raw image files. Raw files keep more details from the camera.
