VSCO (pronounced "vis-koh") is a popular mobile app for photography. It works on both iOS (like iPhones) and Android phones. The app was created by Joel Flory and Greg Lutze. With VSCO, you can take pictures and make them look amazing. It has special filters and tools to help you edit your photos.

How VSCO Started

Visual Supply Company, the company behind VSCO, was started in California in 2011. Joel Flory and Greg Lutze were the founders. The VSCO app officially launched in 2012.

The company grew quickly. By May 2014, it had raised $40 million from investors. These are people or groups who put money into a company to help it grow. In 2017, VSCO started offering a special membership. This allowed users to get even more features for a yearly fee.

By 2018, VSCO had received $90 million in total funding. It also had more than 2 million paying members. In 2019, VSCO bought a company called Rylo. Rylo made tools for editing videos. Later, in December 2020, VSCO also bought Trash. This was another app that used AI to help edit videos.

VSCO's main office is in Oakland, California. They also have an office in Chicago, Illinois. By April 2018, over 30 million people were using the VSCO app.

Using the VSCO App

To use VSCO, you first need to create an account. It's like signing up for any other app.

Taking and Editing Photos

You can take new photos directly in the app. You can also bring in pictures from your phone's camera roll. The app lets you edit your photos in many ways.

  • Preset Filters: These are like quick styles that change the look of your photo with one tap.
  • Editing Tools: You can use the "toolkit" for more detailed changes. This lets you adjust things like:
    • Fade: How much the colors blend.
    • Clarity: How clear and sharp the image looks.
    • Skin Tone: To make skin look natural.
    • Tint: Adding a slight color to the whole picture.
    • Sharpness: Making edges more defined.
    • Saturation: How bright and strong the colors are.
    • Contrast: The difference between light and dark areas.
    • Temperature: Making colors warmer (more yellow) or cooler (more blue).
    • Exposure: How bright or dark the photo is overall.

You can edit both JPEG and raw image files. Raw files hold more detail, which is great for editing.

Sharing Your Creations

After editing, you can post your photos to your VSCO profile. You can also add captions and hashtags to describe them. If you want, you can save your edited photos back to your phone's camera roll. You can also share them with other social media apps.

If you have a VSCO yearly membership, you can also edit videos from your camera roll. However, you cannot post these videos directly to your VSCO profile.
