Vadstena Municipality (Vadstena kommun) is a special area in Sweden. It is like a local government district, found in the southeast part of the country in Östergötland County. The main town and where the local government is located is called Vadstena.
The old city of Vadstena was once joined with another area, Motala Municipality, in the 1970s. But this didn't work out very well! So, they decided to separate. In 1980, Vadstena Municipality became its own area again. It includes 12 smaller, original communities.

Nature and Environment
Vadstena is located right by Vättern, which is Sweden's second-largest lake. When the town was first started around the year 1000 AD, fishing from the lake was a very important way for people to get food. The town also relied on trade by ship across the lake.
There are two cool nature reserves in Vadstena Municipality:
- The Ombergsliden is a large, lime-rich marsh. It covers about 230,000 square meters. You can find some special plants here, like the rare orchid called Tuber geophyte (Gymnadenia odoratissima). There's also a carnivorous plant called the Butterwort that eats insects!
- The Kastad kulle torräng is a hill made of lime. It has many unique plants that are not often found in this area. For example, you can see the Oxytropis pilosa here, which is usually only found in places like Gotland.
Historical Sights and Landmarks
Vadstena Municipality is full of interesting historical places to visit!
Famous Buildings
- Vadstena Castle: This is a beautiful old castle with a long history.
- Vadstena Abbey: A historic monastery that was very important in Sweden.
- The Vadstena Hospital area and museum: This place has buildings from the 1500s all the way to the 1900s. It's like a living museum!
Ancient Churches
- Herrestad Church: This church was opened in 1112. This makes it one of the oldest stone churches in all of Sweden! Its tower was built about 100 years later and still looks much like it did centuries ago.
- Rogslösa Church: Built in the 1200s, this church is special because of its unique designs. These designs look like they were influenced by ancient Celtic art.
- There are many other interesting medieval churches in the municipality. These include Hagebyhöga Church, Väversunda Church, Hov Church, Örberga Church, and Nässja Church. Most of these churches started being built in the 1100s.
