Valledoria is a charming town located in Sardinia, an island in Italy. It sits right in the middle of the Gulf of Asinara. You can find it close to where the Coghinas river flows into the sea.
The town is also known by its local names. In the Gallurese and Sassarese languages, it is called Codaruìna. Valledoria is a comune, which is like a local government area or municipality in Italy.
A Look Back at Valledoria's Past
Valledoria has a long and interesting history. Long ago, it was part of an old kingdom called the giudicato of Torres. This was a powerful area in Sardinia.
Later, a strong family from Genoa, called the Doria family, took control of the area. After the Aragonese took over Sardinia, a terrible sickness, like the plague, hit the region. This caused many people to leave or die, and the area became very empty.
How Valledoria Grew
In the early 1800s, the population started to grow again. New settlers came from nearby towns like Aggius and Tempio Pausania. They helped create the settlement known as Codaruina.
In 1960, Codaruina became its own independent comune. It was given the new name of Valledoria. A few years later, in 1983, a part of Valledoria called Santa Maria Coghinas also became its own separate comune.
