History of Valley City
Early Settlers and Salt Works
In 1810, a man named Seba Bronson, Jr. arrived in the area that would become Valley City. He was a veteran from the Revolutionary War. Bronson settled in a part of Liverpool Township known as "Hardscrabble." This was near the corner of Columbia Road and Grafton Road.
Bronson was a "squatter," meaning he lived on land without officially owning it at first. He planted corn, built a home, and started a successful salt works. A salt works is a place where salt is made, which was very important back then for preserving food.
Community Life and Fun Events
The Frog Jump Capital
Valley City is famous for being "The Frog Jump Capital of Ohio." Since 1962, the community has held an annual frog jumping contest. This event is inspired by a funny story by Mark Twain called "The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County."
On April 2, 1964, just two years after the first contest, the Governor Jim Rhodes declared it the official state frog jumping championship! In 1969, some champion frogs from Valley City even competed in a bigger contest in Calaveras County, California. One of these frogs belonged to Governor Rhodes himself.
Today, the frog jumping contest happens every year in early August at Mill Stream Park. In 2021, the event was super popular, with over 750 frogs jumping and about 4,000 people attending!
Annual Street Fair
Another fun event in Valley City is the annual street fair. It takes place on the last weekend of August. This fair helps raise money to support the local fire department, which is very important for the community.
