Discover the History of the Center

The Valley Nature Center started way back in 1984 as a non-profit group. It grew from an empty piece of land into the beautiful nature spot you see today. A brand new building for the center opened in 2014. Now, the park has a 1-mile trail that winds through a cactus garden, peaceful bog ponds, and a colorful butterfly garden.

Meet the Animals of the Valley

The Valley Nature Center is home to many different creatures! You might spot beautiful butterflies like the Malachite butterfly and the Melanis pixe. There are also many birds, including the plain chachalaca, bright green jays, loud great kiskadees, and the tiny buff-bellied hummingbird. On the ground, you could see a Texas tortoise, a Texas horned lizard, or an Eastern Cottontail Rabbit. The park is a fantastic place to watch migrating birds and butterflies as they travel through the area.

Explore the Unique Plant Collection

The center has a special collection of plants that are native to the Lower Rio Grande Valley. These plants come from different natural areas nearby, such as the Sabal Palm Grove, the Arroyo Colorado brush areas, and the Barretal. You'll also find plants from the Coastal Lomas and the Chihuahuan Thorn forest, which is also known as the Rio Grande-Falcon thorn woodland. It's like a living museum of local plants!
