A Village on the Move: Valmeyer's Story
In 1993, a very big flood, called the Great Flood of 1993, hit the area. Valmeyer was located in a low-lying area near the river. After the flood, the people of Valmeyer made a big decision. They chose to move their entire village about 2 miles (3.2 km) east. This new spot was much higher, over 300 feet (91 meters) above the old location.
The village was rebuilt with help from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). FEMA is a government group that helps communities after disasters. The old town site is now mostly empty. It is sometimes called a ghost town because most people moved away. Valmeyer's successful move is a great example for other towns that might need to relocate because of floods.
