Valparaiso's Early History
The exact beginnings of Valparaiso are not fully known. The village first appeared on a map in 1863. Its name, Valparaiso, comes from a Spanish phrase. It means "vale of paradise" or "valley of paradise." Valparaiso officially became a village in 1880.
