Varco is a small, quiet place in Mower County, Minnesota, in the United States. It's known as an "unincorporated community." This means it's a group of homes or buildings that isn't officially a city or town with its own local government. Instead, it's part of a larger area, like a county or township, which handles its services.

The Story of Varco

How Varco Began

Varco was first planned out in 1875. When a town is "platted," it means its streets and building lots are carefully mapped out. This community was named after a man named Thomas Varco, who owned the land where the town was going to be built.

Thomas Varco was born in England. When he was four years old, his family moved to Canada. Later, in 1850, he and his wife, Emaline Eddy, moved to Wisconsin.

Moving to Minnesota

In 1856, Thomas and Emaline moved to Austin Township, Mower County, Minnesota. Thomas lived on the same farm, which became known as Varco Station, for the rest of his life.

A post office was opened in Varco in 1875, making it easier for people to send and receive mail. However, the post office only stayed open for a few years, closing down in 1882.
