Past Communities in Austin Township

Austin Township has been home to a few small communities over the years.

Varco Station

Varco Station was a small village that started in 1875. It was named after Thomas Varco. This village was located about three miles south of the city of Austin. It was once a stop on the Milwaukee Railroad and even had a grain elevator. Trains continued to deliver goods to Varco Station until the 1950s. Today, it's still a small, unincorporated settlement along Mower County Highway 4.

Two Rivers

The old town of Two Rivers, also known as Milton, was founded in 1857. It was located where Turtle Creek flows into the Cedar River. This area is now part of the city of Austin, near 4th Street S.W. and Calvary Cemetery. Long ago, Two Rivers had a mill and a hotel. As the city of Austin grew, Two Rivers became smaller and eventually became part of Austin.

Cemeteries in the Township

Austin Township is home to a few cemeteries, which are places where people are buried.

  • Cedar City Cemetery is in the far southeast part of the township. The land for this cemetery was given by David Chandler, who was one of the first people to settle in the nearby community of Cedar City. The first person buried here was a man named Robinson.
  • Rose Creek Cemetery is located in the southwest part of the township, right by the banks of Rose Creek.
  • Calvary Cemetery is located within the city limits of Austin, in section 10 of the township.
