Vasile Blaga, born on July 26, 1956, is a Romanian politician. He served as the Speaker of the Senate, which is like the upper house of the Romanian Parliament, from 2011 to 2012. He also held important roles as a government minister. These roles included being the Minister of Regional Development and Housing, and twice as the Minister of Administration and Internal Affairs.
He was a member of the Democratic Party (PD). He was the Minister of Administration and Interior in the government led by Călin Popescu-Tăriceanu from 2004 to 2007. He also served in one of the governments led by Emil Boc. He left this position in September 2010.
In November 2011, Vasile Blaga became the President of the Senate of Romania. This happened after the previous president, Mircea Geoană, was removed from his position. In June 2012, Blaga also became the leader of the Democratic Liberal Party (PDL). He was removed from his role as President of the Senate in July 2012.
Vasile Blaga's Journey in Politics

Vasile Blaga was born in Petrileni, a place in Bihor County. His political journey began after the fall of Communism in Romania in 1989. This was a big change for the country.
He first served as a Member of Parliament in the Romanian Chamber of Deputies. He represented his home area, Bihor County, from 1990 to 1991. After that, he became the Prefect of Bihor. A prefect is like a government representative in a county. He held this job until 1993.
In 1996, he was elected to the Romanian Senate. He was part of the Democratic Party and represented Bihor County. He was re-elected in 2004 for the Justice and Truth Alliance (DA). This alliance included his party, the Democratic Party. This time, he represented Bucharest, the capital city, where he lives now. Later in 2004, Blaga was appointed as the Minister of Administration and Interior Affairs.
In 2008, he ran for the position of mayor of Bucharest. He was a candidate for the Democratic Liberal Party (PDL). He wanted to take over from the mayor at that time, Adriean Videanu. Blaga came in second place in the first round of the elections.
He was the president of the Democratic Liberal Party (PDL) until 2014. That year, his party joined with the National Liberal Party (PNL). He then became a co-president of the new combined party, working alongside Alina Gorghiu. He resigned from this co-leader role in September 2016.
