A Look at Vassy-sous-Pisy's Past
How Did Vassy-sous-Pisy Start?
A very old road, used to travel between Paris and Lyon, once passed right through Vassy. People first wrote about the town in the 1200s, calling it Vasseium.
The Rise of Industry and Growth
In 1786, people started looking into whether they could dig for coal in the area. Later, in the 1800s, Vassy got its own train station. This was on the train line that connected Auxerre and Avallon. The station was built thanks to a factory owned by Honoré Gariel.
Honoré and his brother Hippolyte started a company that made a special kind of building material called hydraulic lime. This material was very strong and could be used in construction. Their company became very successful.
Because of the factory, many workers moved to Vassy. This made the small village, which used to be part of Étaule, grow into its own official town or commune.
Community Buildings and Changes
The Gariel family also helped the town by funding a school for girls. This school was run by a group of nuns called the Sisters of Providence. They also helped build a chapel and a house for the local priest.
As more people moved to Vassy, the town needed a bigger church. So, a new church was started in 1859 and finished in 1862.
