Vatra Moldoviței (also known as German: Watra Moldawitza) is a small town, or commune, located in the western part of Suceava County. This area is in the historical region of Bukovina, found in northeastern Romania.
The commune includes three villages: Ciumârna, Paltinu, and Vatra Moldoviței itself. The village of Vatra Moldoviței is famous for the Moldovița Monastery. This monastery is so special that it's recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The town sits by the Moldovița River and its smaller streams. It is surrounded by two mountain ridges: the Great Ridge and the Feredeu Ridge.
The first time Vatra Moldoviței was officially mentioned was in 1402. This was when Alexander the Good founded the Moldovița Monastery. For a long time, up until the mid-1900s, many German people, especially Bukovina Germans, lived in this commune.
