A Glimpse into Vegas's Past
Puerto Rico used to belong to Spain. After a war called the Spanish–American War, Spain gave Puerto Rico to the United States in 1898. This was part of a peace agreement known as the Treaty of Paris of 1898. Because of this, Puerto Rico became an area connected to the United States.
In 1899, the United States government did a count of all the people in Puerto Rico. This count is called a census. They found that Vegas and a nearby barrio called Caimito had a total of 1,405 people living there together.
