Vegas Abajo is a small, rural area known as a barrio located in the Adjuntas municipality of Puerto Rico. It's a quiet place where people live surrounded by nature.
History of Vegas Abajo
Puerto Rico became a part of the United States after the Spanish–American War. This happened because of an agreement called the Treaty of Paris of 1898. After the war, Puerto Rico was considered an unincorporated territory of the United States. This means it's a territory belonging to the U.S. but not fully part of it, like a state.
In 1899, the United States government took a census (a count of the population) in Puerto Rico. They found that Vegas Abajo barrio, along with a nearby area called Guayo, had a combined population of 1,275 people. Over the years, the number of people living in Vegas Abajo has changed, as shown in the table below.
