25 de Diciembre is a city in the San Pedro department of Paraguay. It's located about 120 kilometers (75 miles) north of Asunción, the capital city. A main road, National Route 3, goes right through it, connecting it to Asunción.
The city's name, "25 de Diciembre" (December 25th), comes from a very important date in Paraguay's past. On December 25, 1842, the Declaration of National Independence was officially announced in Asunción. This confirmed the country's freedom, which was first declared on May 15, 1811.
25 de Diciembre is known as "The Portal of the North." This is because it's the first city you reach when traveling into the northeastern part of Paraguay on Route 3. The paved road has helped the district grow quickly, connecting it to the capital and other parts of the country.
Life in 25 de Diciembre
This area has many different types of economic activities. However, farming and raising animals are the most important. About 700 people live in the city center. The entire district has around 9,147 residents, spread across 11 neighborhoods around the town.
History of 25 de Diciembre
Early Days
Long ago, the area where 25 de Diciembre now stands was covered by huge forests and open fields. There were also wetlands. Only tribes of Ava Guarani people lived there. You can still find old pottery and jars with human bones from these tribes in places like San Juan Bosco and Santa Rosa. Many of these ancient items are now on display at the Museo del Barro in Asunción.
The city didn't start exactly where it is today. The first people to settle here lived in the forests of Isla Guasu, in the western part of the district. This area was known as San Antonio. There were also cattle ranches in the northern region, shared with San Estanislao.
The first settlers were mostly farmers, ranchers, and people who moved from different parts of Paraguay. Some even came from other countries, fleeing during the First and Second World Wars. Settlers from Germany, Turkey, and Spain made their homes here.
Becoming a District
For a while, people thought about making Potrero Yvate or Mboi'y the main center for the district because of their good locations. But eventually, the current spot was chosen. Today, Mboi'y and Potrero Yvate are well-developed areas with all the necessary services.
Before it became its own district, Veinticinco de Diciembre was part of San Estanislao. Teachers from the school in San Antonio even got their supplies from Juan de Mena, which is in a different department.
Finally, on September 7, 1973, a special law (Law 396) officially made 25 de Diciembre its own independent district. It was separated from San Estanislao and became a third-category municipality.
