Lepidium oblongum is a type of flowering plant. It belongs to the mustard family. People often call it veiny pepperweed.
This plant grows naturally in many parts of North America. You can find it in Mexico, Guatemala, and El Salvador. It also grows in the western and south-central United States. This includes states from California to Mississippi. It has also been brought to Hawaii by people. Lepidium oblongum can live in many different kinds of places.
About Veiny Pepperweed
Lepidium oblongum is an annual plant. This means it lives for only one growing season. It grows from a seed, flowers, makes new seeds, and then dies.
The plant has a small stem that branches out. It can grow to be about 20 to 30 centimeters (8 to 12 inches) tall. The stem is covered with tiny hairs. Its leaves are spaced out and divided into thin, finger-like parts.
Flowers and Fruits
The flowers of Lepidium oblongum are very tiny. They grow in a cluster called a raceme. A raceme is a type of flower arrangement where flowers grow along a central stem. These small flowers are mostly made up of sepals. Sepals are like small, leaf-like parts that protect the flower bud. Sometimes, you might see a tiny, leftover petal. This petal is called "vestigial" because it's no longer fully developed or useful.
After the flowers bloom, they produce small fruits. These fruits are like tiny, notched capsules. They are only about 2 or 3 millimeters long. Inside these capsules are the seeds.
There are two main types, or varieties, of this plant. One type, called var. insulare, is found only along the coast. It grows in California and the Baja California area.
