Verna Hart (born January 28, 1961 – died April 26, 2019) was an African-American artist. She was famous for her paintings that showed strong feelings, especially about jazz music.

Verna grew up in Harlem, a lively neighborhood in New York City. Her art was so good that it was shown in United States embassies in Africa and other government offices.

In 1999, Verna created a special art project called Jammin' Under the El. This artwork was made for the New York City Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA). You can see it at the Myrtle Avenue station (BMT Jamaica Line) in Brooklyn. It features beautiful stained glass windows showing different music scenes. These windows are on the station platforms and inside the station building.

Verna was also an art teacher. She taught at Springfield Gardens High School in Queens. She also taught at Medgar Evers College in Brooklyn, which is part of the City University of New York.

Verna Hart's Early Life and Education

Verna Hart was born in Harlem, New York. Her father, Earl Alphonso Hart, was a detective sergeant. Her mother was Pauline (Shomo) Hart. When Verna was four, her family moved to Middle Village, Queens.

How Verna Studied Art

While Verna was a student at Andrew Jackson High School in Cambria Heights, Queens, she took painting classes. These classes were held at Cooper Union, a famous art school.

She continued her art education after high school. Verna earned a bachelor's degree in fine arts from the School of Visual Arts. She then got a master's degree in painting from Pratt Institute. In 1991, she also earned a master's degree in education from the Bank Street College of Education.

Remembering Verna Hart

Verna Hart moved to Wilmington, Delaware, about 20 years before she passed away. She moved there to get medical care for one of her children. Verna died at her home in Wilmington. Her son, Romare, shared that she had a seizure while she was sleeping.

Verna Hart's Art in Pop Culture

Verna Hart's amazing artwork appeared in many places. You could see her art in movies and on television shows. Her paintings were also used on music album covers.

For example, her art was featured in Spike Lee's 1990 film Mo' Better Blues. It also appeared on Branford Marsalis' 1992 album, I Heard You Twice the First Time.
