Vernon Valley is a small community called a hamlet. It is found in the Town of Huntington in Suffolk County, which is on Long Island, New York, in the United States.

This hamlet is located at the southeast edge of the village of Northport. It shares the same postal code as Northport and is part of the larger area known as East Northport.

The name "Vernon Valley" also refers to a long, low area of land, or valley. This valley stretches south for about 1.5 miles towards East Northport. A main road, "Vernon Valley Road," runs through this area.

A building that is now the St. Paul's Lutheran School was once a place called The Vernon Valley Inn. When the inn closed, the name "Vernon Valley" was mostly used only for the road itself.

Exploring Vernon Valley's Past

Early Names and Local Changes

The area where Vernon Valley is located was first known as "Red Hook." This spot was centered around a busy intersection. Today, this intersection includes NYS Route 25A, Main Street, Waterside Avenue, and Vernon Valley Road.

In the late 1800s, the village of Northport became an official incorporated village. When this happened, the northwest part of the "Red Hook" area became part of the new village limits.
