Alfie's Adventures: The Story
This book tells a fun story about Alfie Atkins. He is a five-year-old boy who loves to play. His dad is a big part of his playtime.
Alfie's Toolbox Rules
Alfie's dad keeps his toolbox in the wardrobe. Alfie is not usually allowed to use it. This is because the saw inside is quite dangerous. Instead, Alfie often plays with his cat, Puzzle.
Some days, Alfie's dad is busy reading the newspaper. He might also be watching TV. On these days, he doesn't pay much attention to what Alfie is doing. When Alfie asks for the toolbox, his dad sometimes lets him use it. He just reminds Alfie to be careful with the saw.
Building a Helicopter
Alfie takes the toolbox and some wooden planks. His dad continues to read. He tells Alfie again not to use the saw. Alfie starts working with the tools. The only sound is his hammer hitting the wood.
Alfie builds a cool helicopter. He imagines flying it high above a jungle at night. The moonlight shines down on him. Suddenly, his cat Puzzle turns into a fierce lion! The lion runs right towards Alfie. Alfie yells that he needs the saw to escape.
Dad Joins the Fun
Alfie's dad looks up to see what is happening. He realizes Alfie is playing an exciting game. He decides to join his son. Together, they pretend to travel far away. They watch boats, cars, planes, and clouds from the sky. Finally, they land safely back in their living room.
A Tricky Ending
Later, the TV news begins. Alfie's dad wants to watch it. Alfie pretends to be stuck between the planks of his helicopter. His dad jokes that maybe he needs the saw to free him. Alfie then admits he was just pretending. He says it's not really necessary to use the saw. Alfie is very happy that his dad played with him.
