Life and Creative Work
Gunilla Bergström was born in Gothenburg, Sweden. In 1966, she moved to Stockholm to start her career as a journalist. She wrote for big Swedish newspapers like Aftonbladet and Dagens Nyheter.
Becoming a Children's Author
In 1971, Gunilla wrote her first children's book. The next year, in 1972, she released her very first Alfie Atkins book. Alfie is a boy who lives with his dad. Gunilla kept writing children's books after that. By 2007, she had written twenty-five Alfie books!
Alfie Atkins Around the World
The Alfie Atkins books have been translated into 35 different languages. More than eight million copies have been sold all over the world. In Sweden alone, four million copies have been sold. In 2006, one of her books, Alfons och soldatpappan, was released in seven languages at the same time. This was a first for a Swedish children's book.
Inspiration and Style
Gunilla Bergström also wrote books about other characters, like Milla, Bill, and Bolla. She said that her ideas for stories came from everyday life. She was also interested in how people think and act. She often used these ideas in her books. Gunilla drew all her own pictures and often used a special art style called collage.
Bok-Makaren Company
Gunilla Bergström had her own company called Bok-Makaren. This name means "Book-Maker" in English. This company manages the rights for the Alfie Atkins series. They allow others to create theater shows, dolls, puzzles, and computer games based on Alfie. Gunilla believed it was fine to make products from famous stories. She always made sure to choose carefully who could use her characters.
