Viacheslav Platonov (born January 21, 1939 – died December 26, 2005) was a very important person in Russian volleyball. He was both a skilled player and an amazing coach. Many people remember him for leading the Soviet men's national volleyball team to win big.
Under his coaching, the Soviet team won gold medals in major world events. They won the World Championship in 1978 and again in 1982. They also won gold at the 1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow.

Playing Volleyball
Before becoming a famous coach, Platonov was a volleyball player himself. He played for several Russian club teams. These teams included SKIF, SKA, and Spartak. He played club volleyball from 1954 until 1967.
Coaching Achievements
Viacheslav Platonov is best known for his incredible coaching career. He coached the Soviet men's team for many years. His first time coaching them was from 1977 to 1985. He came back to coach them again from 1990 to 1991.
Leading National Teams
In 1992, he coached the same team, but it was called the Unified Team then. Later, he coached the Russian men's team. He led the Russian team from 1995 to 1997.
Club Coaching Success
Platonov also coached several club teams. One of his most successful clubs was Automobilist Leningrad. He led this team to win the USSR Championship title twice. They won in 1983 and again in 1989.
Hall of Fame Coach
Because of his amazing success and contributions to volleyball, Platonov received a special honor. In 2002, he was added to the International Volleyball Hall of Fame. This means he is recognized as one of the greatest volleyball coaches ever.
