The Story of Vicksburg
Vicksburg was officially planned out in 1867. This means its streets and lots were drawn on a map. It got its name to remember a big event from the American Civil War. This was when the city of Vicksburg, Mississippi surrendered.
Vicksburg had its own post office from 1871 until 1901. When the town was at its busiest, it had many important places. These included a general store where people bought supplies. There was also a creamery, a sawmill, and a church. Kids went to school there, and a blacksmith fixed tools. The town even had a doctor's office.
By 1905, Vicksburg was abandoned. This happened because the new railroads were built elsewhere. They did not pass through Vicksburg. Today, the only thing left of the old town is a cemetery. You can find it north of where the town used to be. Its location is 44°39′50″N 95°13′37″W / 44.66389°N 95.22694°W.
