Early Life and Family
Victor Amadeus was born in Turin, a city in Piedmont. His father was Charles Emmanuel I, Duke of Savoy, and his mother was Catherine Micaela of Spain. Catherine was the daughter of King Philip II of Spain.
Victor spent much of his childhood in Madrid, Spain. He lived at the royal court with his grandfather, King Philip II. He stayed there until his grandfather died in 1598, when Victor was eleven years old. In 1605, his older brother, Filippo Emanuele, passed away. This made Victor the next in line to rule the Duchy of Savoy.
Becoming Duke
Victor Amadeus became the Duke of Savoy in 1630 after his father died. His father's decisions had made things difficult with both France and Spain. The Duchy of Savoy needed soldiers to protect its lands.
However, there was not enough money to hire soldiers. So, Victor Amadeus signed a peace agreement with Spain. This helped to calm things down for a while.
The Treaty of Cherasco
After a war called the War of the Mantuan Succession, Savoy had to give up a town called Pinerolo to France. This was a big deal because Pinerolo gave France an easy path into Savoy and the rest of Italy. The rulers of Savoy were not happy about losing this land. They worked for many years to try and get it back.
Later, Victor Amadeus tried to create a group of countries against Spain. He won two battles against the Spanish army. One was in 1636 at the Battle of Tornavento. The other was on September 8, 1637, at the Battle of Mombaldone.
His Death
On September 25, 1637, Victor Amadeus became very sick. This happened after he had dinner with the Duke of Créqui. Another important noble from Savoy, Count Augusto Manfredo Scaglia di Verrua, also died that same week after the dinner. This made people wonder if they had been poisoned. It caused some tension between Savoy and France.
The Duke was taken to Vercelli, where he died on October 7, 1637. He was 50 years old.
Marriage and Children
In 1619, Victor Amadeus married Christine Marie of France. She was the daughter of King Henry IV of France. After Victor Amadeus died, Christine Marie became the ruler of the Duchy of Savoy from 1637 to 1663.
Victor Amadeus and Christine Marie had several children:
- A son who was stillborn (1621)
- Prince Louis Amadeus of Savoy (1622 – 1628)
- Prince Francis Hyacinth of Savoy (1632 – 1638), who became Duke of Savoy after his father.
- Princess Luisa Cristina of Savoy (1629 – 1692)
- Prince Charles Emmanuel of Savoy (1634 – 1675), who also became Duke of Savoy.
- Princess Margaret Yolande of Savoy (1635 – 1663)
- Princess Henrietta Adelaide Marie of Savoy (1636 – 1676)
- Princess Catherine Beatrice of Savoy (1636 – 1637), Henrietta Adelaide's twin sister.
