Victoria is an area in the city of Newport, in the country of Wales. It is known as both a "community" and an "electoral ward." A community is like a local area with its own identity, and an electoral ward is a division used for voting in local elections.
This area is located next to the River Usk on its west and south sides. Other boundaries include Newport Bridge and several roads like Clarence Place and Church Road. The area is managed by the Newport City Council, which helps run local services.
Victoria includes a district called Maindee. This is where the Newport Rugby Club plays, and it's also home to the yearly Maindee Festival, a fun event for everyone. Victoria, especially Maindee, has a very diverse population. Many people living here have roots in South Asia, particularly from Pakistan and Bangladesh. There are also people from Kurdish backgrounds.
How Victoria is Governed
Victoria is an important part of the Newport City Council. This means that people living in Victoria vote for two councillors to represent them. These councillors are local leaders who work to make decisions for the community.
In 2021, there were two special elections, called by-elections, to choose new councillors for Victoria. Then, in the main May 2022 elections, Gavin Horton and Farzina Hussain from the Labour party were re-elected as the councillors for Victoria. They continue to represent the area on the Newport City Council.
