Victoria Marie Calvert is an American lawyer and a federal judge. She was born in 1981. She serves as a judge for the United States District Court for the Northern District of Georgia. This court handles important legal cases in the northern part of Georgia.

Early Life and Education

Victoria Marie Calvert was born Victoria Marie Stubbs in 1981. Her father was a truck driver. Her mother's name is Sherrie Stubbs.

When Victoria was five years old, her father passed away. After this, her last name changed.

She went to Duke University and earned a degree in 2003. Later, she studied law at New York University School of Law. She received her law degree in 2006.

Legal Career

After finishing law school, Victoria Calvert started her career as a lawyer. From 2006 to 2012, she worked at a law firm called King & Spalding in Atlanta. There, she helped people and companies with legal issues.

Public Service as a Defender

From 2012 to 2022, Victoria Calvert worked as a staff attorney. She was part of the federal public defender program in Atlanta. In this role, she helped people who could not afford a lawyer. She made sure they had fair legal representation.

Important Cases

During her time as a lawyer, Victoria Calvert worked on several important cases. She was part of a team that helped a person named Nicholas Bryant. His death sentence for murder was later changed by the Georgia Supreme Court.

She also worked on a case in 2020 involving Titus Bates. He was accused of shooting a U.S. Marshals Service officer. Calvert worked hard to defend her client in this case.

Becoming a Federal Judge

On September 30, 2021, Joe Biden, the President of the United States, chose Victoria Calvert to become a federal judge. She was nominated for a position on the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Georgia. This position became open when Judge Thomas W. Thrash Jr. retired.

The Confirmation Process

To become a federal judge, a person must be approved by the United States Senate. A hearing was held in December 2021. The Senate Judiciary Committee reviewed her nomination.

Her nomination was sent back to the President once. But she was nominated again on the same day. In January 2022, the committee voted to approve her.

On March 22, 2022, the full Senate voted to confirm her. She officially became a judge on April 5, 2022. Victoria Calvert is the second Black female judge to serve on the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Georgia.
