Vienna is a city in Wood County, West Virginia, United States. It is located along the Ohio River. In 2020, about 10,676 people lived there. Vienna is the second-largest city in the Parkersburg–Vienna metropolitan area.

History of Vienna

In 1794, a man named Joseph Spencer gave the city its name. Joseph Spencer helped his father during the American Revolutionary War. The area started as a 5,000-acre settlement. This land was given to Spencer for his service in the war.

Vienna officially became a city in 1935. Charles R. Blair was Vienna's first mayor. For many years, until the 1940s, Vienna was known for making a special type of glass called Vitrolite.

Environmental Concerns

A stream in Vienna had a type of chemical pollution called PFOA. This pollution came from a landfill owned by a chemical company. This issue led to an important lawsuit about the chemical contamination in the area.
